North Carolina Cherokee Casino - Gambling Casinos
North Carolina casinos are not as prolific as in some other states because currently gambling is only legal on the Cherokee Indian reservation which is in the eastern part of the state. All casinos are owned by the Eastern Band of Cherokee, and the only three casino options being the Cherokee Tribal Casino, Harrah’s Smoky Mountains Casino and Tee Pee Village Casino. Of course, the most popular casino and the one that attracts the most tourist traffic is Harrah’s.
Many people might assume that North Carolina casinos are in the big cities like the capital of Raleigh, or else in Charlotte, even in Wilmington or Winston Salem, however there is only one major casino and it is just a few miles away from the Tennessee line on the Cherokee reservation.
Also, this casino is a bit different than typical casinos because the only cards that are in the casino are ones that the computer creates. The current North Carolina gaming law approves video versions of blackjack, crap, poker, video poker and slots for the Cherokee casinos. At this time, computer regulated games of skill are the only types of games available on the reservation and pari-mutuel betting is still considered illegal.
Because the law requires the games to be part skill rather than just luck, the player receives two opportunities. First, the player pulls the handle to get the first set of cards, and then the gambler chooses to keep either one card or up to all three and then pulls the handle again. Deciding on which cards to keep and which cards to discard is the skill part of these slot machines.
Of course, there are table games like blackjack available. The table, chips, dealer, and players are all the same, however the cards are digitally created by state of the art video technology. So, when you sit down to a table to bet, you will have a small computer screen in front of you that will show you your cards. Then it is up to you to decide to receive an additional card or cards and when to fold.
The law also regulates how much the casino can earn on the slot machines, which certainly affects your “skill” at playing the games and the amount of money you can win. North Carolina law states the slots, video poker machines and video poker tables must return a maximum of 98% and a minimum of 83%. Since this is state law, no matter how skilled you are at playing slot machines you are going to have some high percentages working against you.
However, the Cherokee Indians are interested in expanding their casino games and options and want to offer card games and other gambling options to increase tourism. The State of North Carolina, however, has strict gaming laws and as a result the governor will have to approve any change in North Carolina’s casino games. Several conversations have taken place, however, between the governor and the Cherokee Indians who are hopeful a deal can be made.
