I'm rereading The Psychology of Poker and I was wondering how others view their own play. If you have not read the book, it is a useful source for strategy for against the most common types of player. The book breaks players down into 4 general categories.
1. Loose-Passive - calling stations, play lots of hands and don't raise
often enough and call too much.
2. Loose-Aggressive - maniacs, play too many hands and raise a lot.
Bluff too much and overplay marginal hands.
3. Tight-Passive- the rocks in the game. Play good hands and do not
raise enough. Hard to make money off these guys.
4. Tight-Aggressive - Play good hands and are very aggressive with these
hands. The "A" players.
I realize these categories are very general and there is a middle ground for all 4 areas. I'm just wondering if you had to generalize your own play, where would you fall.
Personally, I'm tight-passive. I don't feel like I maximize the hands I win but I know I have a good chance of winning any pot I enter. I often think I have the best hand but will fold or simply call if the board shows danger signs.
The reason I am curious, I'm trying to fix some holes in my game. I want to get more aggressive and be able to shift gears more easily. I've been forcing myself to make some looser calls and I've found this has been helping my win rate and creates more deception in my game.
Maybe a poll would be good if someone would be kind enough to help me out with it.
Also, I'm making a list of "Poker Resolutions" for the new year. I'm interested in hearing from anyone and everyone on this topic. Thanks! |

Between 3 and 4, but closer to 3 -- so about a 3.2-3.3. I'm reworking my game right now (starting at square 1, baby steps) and working on playing only good hands, and raising those hands when they are very good hands, or when position and table action dictate.
Doing this because I slip into a 1-2 pattern when I am not paying close enough attention, or I am getting bitter because I don't seem to be getting playable hands |

I would consider myself more a combination of 2 and 4 actually! I like to mix up my play a lot, so early on I'll bluff a lot, play more hands than I perhaps should, but as the game gets on I play tighter hands, I play less hand but when I get an opportunity I will go in hard.
Sometimes it works, other times I'm down on my chips early on - however the mixture of play makes people wary which is enough to make them doubt their own hands against mine later on, which can only be a good thing. |
