Someone plz explain this... |

| I personally do it so that the dealer does not mistakenly fold my cards. Happened to me once with AA, never again! |

| So your hand doesn't get "killed" if another player's card hit yours. The weight of the chip(s) prevents your cards from getting replaced accidentally by another player's. I do this all the time because my hand was killed once and I would've won with it. |

| I do this because one time, I was dealing, and I confused the burn cards with my hand that would have won a huge pot and I had to fold it. |

For the above reasons are the only ones I can come up with - I normally associate it with making a bet or call, though I guess it can be a good idea to ensure your cards don't get moved in such a way that you must fold your hand.
I've been fortunate enough not to have ever had a problem, though there is always a first time. |

I like to just make my intentions known - sure I'm forever having to reconsider if theres a raise before me, but if I'm going to call the BB I'll put the chips on my hards.
Gives someone a heads up that you're planning to stay in the hand, and may make them think twice about staying in themselves if they know theres at least one more person going to stay in the hand. I like narrowing down the field, maybe it works, maybe it doesn't. Who knows |

As said, it is to protect your cards... so they don't get mucked when the dealer sweeps the fold cards, and to reduce the chance that moving your chips around will move your cards and expose them.
TJ Cloutier hand his hand swept by the dealer once, and his opponent did not see it. So he cupped his hands like he was covering them and bet out. The guy folded. |
